‘Suits’ Star Gabriel Macht: ‘We Will See Some of Harvey’s Vulnerability Come Out Even More’

Suits returns tonight with the final six episodes of Season 6. As creator Aaron Korsh has told us, the theme is “dealing with loss, and [loss] giving opportunity for growth and change.” Jessica (Gina Torres) has left the firm, leaving Harvey (Gabriel Macht) and Louis (Rick Hoffman) to debate who should step up as managing partner; Mike (Patrick J. Adams) is out of prison, and, as you can see in the sneak peek above, contemplating a future that doesn’t include returning to (Pearson) Specter Litt. It’ll be a rough hour for Mike, and Harvey as well. Macht gave Yahoo TV a preview.

Yahoo TV: What is Harvey’s mindset as we begin Episode 611?
Gabriel Macht: There’s a sense of a success that Harvey has — he feels like all the guilt that he’s been living with for all of this time that Mike has been in prison has subsided a little. I think exaltation is a big word, [but he’s feeling] relief and he’s excited and he wants to celebrate that and bring Mike back to the firm. On the flip side, he has now just lost his mentor and the woman who drives the ship. As we’ll see in the beginning of the episode, Mike responds to Harvey’s offer [to be a consultant] negatively; he doesn’t want to take it. This fear of abandonment that Harvey has had in his overall life experience with his own family members, it’s now becoming a reality in his work life. I think Harvey is feeling not centered, a bit uneven and displaced.

It’s an emotional hour for Harvey. Is that something that will continue through the end of the season?
Yeah, I know of one episode [in particular] … I think for the fans that have been along for this ride for many years, and know what makes Harvey tick and what makes him vulnerable, you’re going to see him follow through on getting in touch with why he is the way he is. We will see some of his vulnerability come out even more. It always depends on what Aaron picks in the takes, but I remember shooting some moments where Harvey was extremely revealing of what’s going on inside him and how sensitive he is.

Harvey and Louis obviously have to figure out how to run the firm without Jessica. What should we expect the dynamic to be between them now?
Well, at first it seems as though Louis is on to something, and Harvey wants to make it work with Louis, and they’re gonna figure out who’s going to be the head of the department. Harvey, in many ways, is lost, and so he doesn’t want to pull the trigger and say, “Look, I am going to be the head of this department, and you’re either with me or you’re against me.” He’s not ready to take the reins, so they have to work it out together, and we’re going to see that in the next few episodes, the push and pull of that power dynamic.

We’re going to see Louis take big chances and take big risks, and he may come up empty at times and that might ruffle Harvey’s feathers, but then we’re going to see what we’ve seen with Harvey and Louis before — them [getting] into it and then [making] up. Then we’re going to see them really lean on each other as friends, because basically all they have is each other. I mean, Harvey will always have Donna as his rock, but since he’s lost Jessica and Mike is really on a journey to figure out what he wants to do in his life, the two people in Harvey’s life right now are Louis and Donna.
