Steve Harvey Harmonizes With 103-Year-Old Gospel Singer

On Little Big Shots: Forever Young, Steve Harvey got some pointers on harmonizing from 103-year-old gospel singer Thomas Kelly, who became the oldest person to perform on the show — and quite possibly the coolest. “Spank the plank,” he said as he slapped hands with Harvey upon meeting him.

Harvey couldn’t help but notice what a snappy dresser Kelly was, saying, “I know you ain’t sittin’ up here with that red satin jacket on. I know you clean.” Kelly replied, “Cleaner than my soul.”

Kelly used his many years of singing experience to teach Harvey how to harmonize with his quartet, the gospel group The Masters of Harmony, which he formed in 1952.

Born in 1913, Kelly hails from Detroit, Michigan. Kelly is a great-great-great grandfather, and also a veteran who joined the Army in 1940. He was ready to come home when Pearl Harbor was bombed. He said, “The commander came in, said, ‘Fellas, no going home. You are in the Army now.'”

Little Big Shots: Forever Young airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on NBC.
