After years of playing Steve Harvey in Saturday Night Live sketches, Kenan Thompson was summoned to Harvey’s daytime show to talk about it. Now, Harvey has played up his annoyance with Thompson’s impression of him; he even confronted Seth Meyers about it just because he worked with Thompson on SNL. So did things get supertense on the Steve Harvey show set? Nah.
“You don’t know the phone calls you put in my life,” teased Harvey in a preview clip of Friday, Feb. 24’s episode. “‘Man, Steve. Did you see Kenan last night?’ I didn’t see Kenan last night. ‘Boy, he did your ass last night.’” Thompson explained why he’s got to do it — Harvey’s such a big personality!
“You’re a funny, big character,” said Thompson. “I mean, your voice is very big. You’ve got a twang. When you talk you got that twang, Steve. That’s your thing, man. And you know, the mustache. That’s your signature.”
The interview also included a sweet moment. Thompson played Junior on Harvey’s ’90s sitcom. He recalled how he learned a lot from watching Harvey have to work after Harvey lost his mother. “You told me it was the hardest thing you ever had to do,” recalled Thompson, “so that made me really not fear performing, you know what I’m saying? Trying to make people laugh, just being able to be yourself in front of people and not be nervous. I learned a lot of that from you.”
