Stephen Colbert’s Live Response to Trump’s Address

In order to comment on Donald Trump’s first presidential address to Congress Tuesday night, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert went live after the president spoke. In his speech, Trump talked about the many things he’s already accomplished, like withdrawing from the “job-killing Trans-Pacific Partnership.” Colbert added, “Yes, the Trans-Pacific Partnership is just one of the ‘trans’ the administration is withdrawing support from.”

One of the most divisive issues throughout Trump’s campaign and presidency has been immigration, and the president let everyone know what he expects from people entering this country. Trump said, “It’s a basic principle that those seeking to enter a country ought to be able to support themselves financially.” Colbert jokingly responded, “Just like the Statue of Liberty says, ‘Give us your tired, your poor, but not so poor they can’t afford a two-bedroom apartment and, like, a Mitsubishi.'”

Trump wasn’t the only one who gave a speech Tuesday night. Former Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear gave the Democrats’ response. In his speech, Beshear introduced himself, saying, “I’m a proud Democrat, but first and foremost, I’m a proud Republican, and Democrat, and mostly, American.” Colbert then embellished on Beshear’s introduction, saying, “I’m also a man, but first and foremost, I’m a woman, and a man, and mostly human, and a dog, ruff ruff.”

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert airs weeknights at 11:35 on CBS.
