Stephen Colbert’s ‘Late Show’ To Cover Dem And GOP Conventions Live

CBSThe Late Show With Stephen Colbert Will broadcast two weeks of live shows during the Democratic and GOP conventions in July. Late Show will have an on-site presence at both conventions, though Colbert will host each night live from his show’s Ed Sullivan Theater in New York, where he and his guests will react to the day’s convention doings.

Colbert’s show will air live on the East Coast from Monday, July 18, through Thursday, July 21 (11:35 PM ET/taped PT), during the Republican National Convention in Cleveland. It will return with another run of live shows Monday, July 25, through Thursday, July 28 (11:35 PM ET/taped PT) during the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia.

Both conventions are expected to be particularly yeasty for late-night TV programs and TV news outlets alike. News operations are greatly beefing up their hours of coverage compared to previous election cycle party conventions. On the Dem side, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has vowed to go all the way to the convention, though Hillary Clinton has snagged the requisite number of delegates to snag the nomination. Today, meanwhile, Donald Trump gave a speech in which he personally invited Bernie’s voters to join his camp.

Trump, late-night TV’s favorite candidate to mock, has been the GOP’s presumptive nominee for some time. But Mitt Romney and others are now blasting away at Trump, and a Never Trump movement still is trying to come up with an alternate universe for its confab than the one in which the real estate developer-turned-reality TV star is declared its nominee.

Meanwhile, over at the old stomping ground of Colbert and Jon Stewart, who is an exec producer of Late Show, The Daily Show has announced it will cover the 2016 Republican and Democratic National Conventions, producing a special week of shows in each city. While not live, the show’s coverage of the 2016 RNC will be telecast from The Breen Center for the Performing Arts in Cleveland from Tuesday, July 19 through Friday, July 22. Coverage of the 2016 DNC will be telecast from the Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia from Tuesday, July 26 through Friday, July 29. The two-week special convention coverage is scheduled to premiere nightly at 11 PM ET, as usual, on Comedy Central.

Last week, HBO’s weekly late-night show Real Time With Bill Maher announced it would air four live, half-hour editions during the GOP and Dem conventions. The specials, presented from Los Angeles where the show is based, will premiere at 11 PM on Wednesday and Thursday, July 20-21, during the GOP convention, and Wednesday and Thursday, July 27-28, during the Dem confab.
