The Aitken BibleAfter the Revolutionary War, the British cut off the supply of Bibles to the United States. Philadelphia printer and bookseller Robert Aitken spent large sums of his own money to print an American edition of the Bible, which Congress reviewed and approved in 1782. It was not only the first English-language Bible printed in the States, but also the only Bible ever to be officially authorized by Congress.
