Larry Hagman, “Dallas”
He’s back as scheming oilman J.R. Ewing on TNT’s new version of the ‘80s primetime soap, but Hagman almost walked away from the role right in the middle of the show’s most famous cliffhanger. Back in 1981, while the country waited all summer long to find out “Who Shot J.R.?” Hagman took advantage of the buzz and pushed for a substantial raise. The network scrambled to find a Plan B, angling to bring in Robert Culp to play J.R., who’d undergo extensive plastic surgery after the shooting. After two episodes of a bandaged body double subbing in for Hagman, the two sides came to an agreement, paving the way for twelve more seasons (and counting!) of Ewing family drama.
