9 More TV Salary Disputes
Carroll O’Connor, “All in the Family”
It’s hard to imagine CBS’s classic ‘70s sitcom without O’Connor at the helm as the hilariously bigoted Archie Bunker… but it almost happened. During Season 5, O’Connor sprung a new salary demand on the producers and refused to show up to work until he got his way. The writers actually wrote Archie out of a few episodes (they had him disappear on the way to an Army convention) and the producers even drew up a post-Archie plan, with the old guy dying off-screen and his pal Stretch Cunningham moving in with the Bunkers. But O’Connor was no Meathead; he eventually returned to his Emmy-winning role for four more seasons.
