Sony & MGM Team Up For Online Shoot-To-Kill Video Game Tournament To Promote ‘Magnificent Seven’

Sony and MGM have teamed up in an online video shoot-to-kill tournament as part of its marketing campaign to promote its remake of The Magnificent Seven. The game involves top players who first shoot bandits in an epic gun battle, with the victor being the one who has the most kills and is still standing after he kills all other players. The multiplayer shooter video game tournament is set for September 19 ahead of the release of their film with seven of the top Counter-Strike: Global Offensive online players.

The studio-sponsored tournament will be held live on Twitch with messages from the players and the film’s stars Chris Pratt and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo. Between the gunplay, the event will intersperse exclusive footage of Magnificent Seven.

Elias Plishner, Executive VP Worldwide Digital Marketing for Sony Pictures, in making the announcement, said: “Twitch has never before brought so many respected and skilled gamers with such a huge following together for a single game. As these seven face off, this is an unparalleled opportunity to bring the action, intensity and fun of The Magnificent Seven to millions of fans worldwide.”

The shoot-to-kill online video game will be set in the Old West and involve seven of the best players of the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive game. Fans will be able to dial in and watch the skill of these players as they kill bandits and fellow gamers one by one. They will be able to interact with the shooters and suggest gameplay ‘handicaps’ until all the shooters are dead but one, who will then be crowned the victor.

Hosted by GoldenBoy along with commentator John “Blu” Mullen, the game will be live-streamed and will include players Summit 1G, TimTheTatman, iiJERiiCHOii, HayliNic, JoshOG, Reynad27, and 2MGOverCSquared — “influencers” who “have a combined reach of over 4 million followers with more than 200 million views on their channels.”

The producers of Magnificent Seven are Roger Birnbaum and Todd Black. The remake of the 1960 John Sturges-directed film, which also stars Denzel Washington, Ethan Hawke and Vincent D’Onofrio, was helmed this time around by Antoine Fuqua. The companies behind this are MGM, Columbia Pictures in association with LStar Capital and Village Roadshow Pictures. It will be released on September 23.

Both Universal and Fox also turned to Twitch to promote Jason Bourne and the last X-Men installment, respectively.
