'The Lion Guard' First Look: Rob Lowe Gets Animated as Simba

He is Rob Lowe, hear him roar. In a surprising (and completely awesome) casting move, The Grinder star is the voice of a grown-up Simba in The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar. The upcoming Disney Channel movie takes place in the world of the classic movie The Lion King, and we’ve got an exclusive sneak peek at Lowe’s debut as the pride patriarch.

In this preview clip, Simba gives fatherly advice to his children, but he seems to have his hands full with his rambunctious second born cub, Kion (Max Charles). Kion is slated to serve as leader of the Lion Guard, a team of animals charged with preserving the Pride Lands, but he would rather play ball with his honey badger friend. On the flip side, big sister Kiara (Eden Riegel) is training to be queen of the Pride Lands, and she’s taking the job very, very seriously.

While Lowe has that ferocious lion voice down, he isn’t the only A-lister hanging out in the animated African Savanna. Gabrielle Union, James Earl Jones, Atticus Shaffer and Sarah Hyland also lend their voices to the spinoff movie, which serves as a prelude for the upcoming Lion Guard series that will debut on Disney Junior next year.

The Lion Guard: Return of the Roar premieres Sunday, Nov. 22 at 7 p.m. on Disney Channel.
