'Sherlock: The Abominable Bride' Gets Premiere Date, Full Trailer

Now we have extra reason to be jolly this New Year’s. The hotly-anticipated Sherlock special finally has an airdate: January 1, 2016 at 9 p.m. When the 90-minute episode premieres on Masterpiece on PBS, it will be the first time viewers have seen Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as Baker Street-dwelling Sherlock Holmes and his trusty aide Dr. Watson since the conclusion of the show’s third season in January 2014. The official description of the special, titled “The Abominable Bride,” is below:

Benedict Cumberbatch (The Imitation Game) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) return as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson in the acclaimed modern retelling of Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic stories. But now our heroes find themselves in 1890s London. Beloved characters Mary Morstan (played by Amanda Abbington), Inspector Lestrade (Rupert Graves) and Mrs. Hudson (Una Stubbs) also turn up at 221b Baker Street. Sherlock: The Abominable Bride is a 90-minute Sherlock Special.

As you’ll notice from the new trailer and photos just released today, creator Steven Moffat has cooked up something a little different for the latest Sherlock adventure. Where the series takes place in the present day, this one-off episode rewinds time to Victorian-era London, which, of course, is when Sherlock Holmes was originally created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. For now, Moffat has declined to give a reason for the flashback, but we’re hoping it involves a time-travel crossover with Moffat’s other show: Doctor Who. After all, who wouldn’t want to see Cumberbatch and Peter Capaldi argue over who gets to control the TARDIS?

UPDATE: Sherlock: The Abominable Bride will also be screened in theaters on January 5 and 6th, with 20 additional minutes of footage. Tickets can be purchased here.
