Shailene Woodley Discusses Her Regrettable Post-Protest Mug Shot on ‘The Late Show’

Actress turned activist Shailene Woodley stopped by the Late Show, where she discussed her October arrest during a protest of the Dakota Access pipeline at the Standing Rock Indian Reservation in North Dakota. Woodley’s issue with the pipeline, like many others’, is that if it were to rupture, oil could leak into the Missouri River, ruining the water supply for thousands of people or more. After her arrest, Woodley took issue with something else: her mug shot.

With Stephen Colbert holding the photo for all to see, Woodley said, “I wish I had known that this was going to be as public as it was. I would have made, like, a face. I feel like I’m looking at the person like, ‘Are you kidding right now?’”

Colbert, on the other hand, thought she looked serene.

Woodley also talked about the moment she was arrested. She said that she was on Facebook Live at the time and that her mother was there with her when it happened. Woodley handed the phone to her mother and told her to keep recording.

Woodley said, “The look on her face — she wasn’t there. She was shocked. I can’t imagine, actually, what it would be like to see your daughter handcuffed and taken away.”
