Seth Meyers Doesn’t Like President Trump Stealing ‘SNL Weekend Update’ Bits
In a recent interview with Time magazine, President Trump pointed out the obvious, saying that he’s president and the reporter is not. On Late Night with Seth Meyers, Meyers took special exception to this statement — not because that’s in no way a reasonable response when your credibility is being brought into question, but because Meyers saw it as a rip-off of Weekend Update on Saturday Night Live.
Meyers said, “I didn’t mind when you talked dirty with Billy Bush or told Russia to hack Hillary’s emails, but when you start stealing bits from Weekend Update anchors, it is on.”
What Meyers is referring to the line Chevy Chase used to open the segment.
“Good evening. I’m Chevy Chase, and you’re not,” Chase would say.
That wasn’t the only line Meyers says Trump stole from Weekend Update. He says Trump also stole from Norm Macdonald, who hosted the segment in the ’90s. He then played a clip of Macdonald.
In the clip, Macdonald says, “I’m Norm Macdonald — and now, the fake news.”
To show how he truly feels, Meyers had to steal a line that we won’t repeat here — a word that a young Dan Aykroyd used to call co-host Jane Curtin when they hosted Weekend Update.
