'Saturday Night Live' #TBT: Superman's funeral brings out all the heroes

They don’t call superheroes “super” for nothing. Yeah, they have special powers, but most of them are also pretty awesome as people.

That’s certainly the case for Wonder Woman, aka Diana Prince, played by Gal Gadot in this summer’s blockbuster hit. Gadot hosts Saturday Night Live this weekend for the first time and it’s likely fans will get to see her in some kind of superhero-related sketch.

SNL has had notable superhero sketches over the years, but 1992’s “Superman’s Funeral” may be the best. It’s definitely the most star-studded, with Adam Sandler as The Flash, Dana Carvey as Batman, Chris Rock as Robin, Rob Schneider as Jimmy Olsen, David Spade as Aquaman, Phil Hartman as Perry White, and Al Franken as Lex Luthor.

Everyone is bummed about losing such a swell guy like Supes.

Even Luthor feels a tiny morsel of regret. Ehhhh, not really. “He was a worthy archrival and I’m here to show my respect, but I gotta tell you, I’m happy he’s gone,” Lex says, adding, “This should be a great year for me.”

Jimmy Olsen (Rob Schneider) greets superheroes and super villains from DC and Marvel come to mourn Superman at his funeral. But obscure hero Black Lightning (Sinbad) is turned away when no one recognizes him.

Tune in to see Gadot host SNL with musical guest Sam Smith this Saturday at 11:30 p.m. on NBC.
