'Saturday Night Live' #TBT: Dive Into Summer With Schmitts Gay

Summer is officially here, which means good times, pool parties… and maybe a cooler full of ice-cold Schmitts Gay.

We’re celebrating the start of bikini season with this ingenious Saturday Night Live ad parody from 1991, which flips the frat-boy chauvinism of typical beer commercials on its head. Adam Sandler and Chris Farley play a couple of dudes who are house-sitting for the weekend; Farley’s not happy to be stuck looking after “a dump,” but Sandler reassures him: “Just wait till you see the pool.”

In magical beer-ad fashion, Sandler turns the faucet to fill up the dingy pool… and it transforms into a paradise filled with oiled-up hunks in tiny Speedos. What follows is your basic party-hard beer ad, except Sandler and Farley are cavorting with scantily-clad men instead of women.

With how far this country has come on the issue of gay rights, this ad might not even seem that shocking these days… but believe us: Back in 1991, six years before Ellen DeGeneres came out, this was pretty shocking — and hilarious.

The ad ends with the booming voice of Phil Hartman announcing: “If you’ve got a big thirst, and you’re gay, reach for a cold, tall bottle of Schmitts Gay.” It just wouldn’t be summer without it.

Saturday Night Live returns for Season 41 this fall on NBC.
