'Saturday Night Live' #TBT: Red Sox Fan Matt Damon Gives Advice to Yankees Lovers

Matt Damon has every reason to be pumped right now. Oh, sure, he’s got a big movie coming out this weekend, Ridley Scott’s The Martian, in which he plays an astronaut stranded on our neighboring planet. But even more importantly, the Red Sox are in the playoffs — against their archrivals, the New York Yankees.

As a Bostoner, born and bred, Damon is a huge Red Sox fan. Huge. But when he stopped by Saturday Night Live in 2002, his beloved team hadn’t won a Major League championship since 1918. So, he knew how to accept defeat graciously, which is why he gave some pointers for Yankees fans (who were dealing with a bad run) with fellow Red Sox fan Seth Meyers during “Weekend Update.”

“You may be feeling something you’re not really used to,” Seth counseled. “It’s called losing.”

Some of their do’s and don’ts: Do breathe. Don’t set your gear on fire.

“Why not try football? You still have the Jets,” Matt suggested, to hearty boos (the Jets were/are terrible). “I’m sorry, sorry… My apologies, we should be sensitive.”

And the most important tip? “It’s not your fault,” Matt said. Except they couldn’t even seem to follow their own advice!

Saturday Night Live returns for its 41st season this Saturday with host Miley Cyrus.
