‘Saturday Night Live’ #TBT: The Boston Teens Go to a Fall Formal

When Jimmy Fallon returned to Saturday Night Live to host last weekend, everyone wondered which classic characters he’d resurrect. It turned out he only brought back one recurring sketch: the Boston Teens. But at least that also meant the return of Rachel Dratch.

It was the 14th time the Boston Teens, Sully and Denise, made an appearance on the show. The sketch made its debut appearance in 1999 with host Garth Brooks. And the most recent occurrence was in 2011, which was Fallon’s first time hosting the show.

In this 2001 clip from the SNL archives, host Gwyneth Paltrow joins Fallon and Dratch as the Boston Teens attend the Fall Formal. Sully tells the video yearbook, “Denise’s best friend, Maureen. While she is empirically hot, she is more dramatic than a hospital scene in a Mexican soap opera.” And Maureen does wail loudly about possibly cheating on her boyfriend with Shane DeSalvo under the bleachers.

And perhaps for the first time ever, Denise actually gives her some sage advice. Of course, then Maureen has a sip of Sunny D mixed with cat asthma medicine. Oh my gahhhd!

SNL returns with host Chris Pine and musical guest LCD Soundsystem on May 6.
