‘Saturday Night Live’ #TBT: Bill Clinton Reviews ‘Independence Day’

A Clinton in the political headlines, aliens invading Earth in an Independence movie… 2016 and 1996 have a lot in common.

Of course, in 2016, it’s Hillary Clinton running for president and the sequel Independence Day: Resurgence is in theaters. Back in 1996, though, Bill Clinton was the Commander in Chief and Will Smith was battling the aliens in the original movie. In this throwback Saturday Night Live clip, Bill (Darrell Hammond) reviews the film.

As he notes, his own life mirrors the movie — the story of a “young, idealistic, compassionate president who’s facing a crisis; frustrated in his personal life; and unable to realize his vision for the country due to a hostile Congress.” Since this was way back in 1996, the jokes center around Bill’s reputation as a womanizer.

We’ll likely see more of Hammond as Bill in the upcoming season of SNL (he already reprised the role this past season). With such a polarizing election, SNL is going to have a field day when it returns this fall.
