'Saturday Night Live' #TBT: Amy Poehler and Bill Hader Attend a Walken Family Reunion

Pixar’s new animated movie Inside Out (opening this weekend) features a pair of Saturday Night Live alums in its main voice cast: Amy Poehler (Joy) and Bill Hader (Fear), playing two of the conflicting emotions in a young girl’s mind. So we’re looking back at one of Poehler and Hader’s best SNL team-ups ever: 2008′s “Meet the Family,” with guest host Christopher Walken attending a very Walken-esque family reunion.

The sketch — where we meet various members of Walken’s extended family, who (of course) all talk exactly like him — is basically just an excuse for a half-dozen SNL cast members to dust off their Walken impression. But we’re not complaining; the results are fantastic. Hader, in particular, shines; he’s always been a master mimic, so it’s no surprise that his imitation of Walken’s distinctively weird cadence is flawless.

Darrell Hammond and Kristen Wiig are great, too, as Walken’s aunt and uncle, as they introduce a foreign exchange student (Kenan Thompson) who’s picked up Walken’s vocal tics as well. But the highlight is Poehler as Walken’s doll-toting niece Maxine, who tells her uncle she doesn’t like ghosts: “They’re spooky… and I don’t respond well to spooky behavior.” Written down, maybe it’s not so funny… but read aloud by Poehler in a Walken-y accent, it’s a riot.

Poehler and Hader recently cited this sketch as one of their favorites they’ve ever done together… and it’s easy to see why. Let’s have another Walken family reunion real soon, OK?

Saturday Night Live returns for Season 41 this fall on NBC.
