'Saturday Night Live' #TBT: Donald Trump Declares Himself Gold in GOP Debate

Everybody’s talking about Donald Trump’s performance in last week’s Republican Party primary debate, from his anti-establishment rhetoric to his heated post-debate exchange with Megyn Kelly.

But if you recall, the Trump also ran for president back in 2012, though he didn’t take part in any of the debates then as a candidate (he did moderate one). Still, at the time, Saturday Night Live aired a brilliant and hilarious sketch imagining a GOP debate including Trump.

As he had so many times before, Darryl Hammond executed a flawless impersonation of the real estate mogul/reality TV star. “The ratings for tonight’s debate are gonna be huuuuge,” he declares in this archive clip. “As big as last Sunday’s Apprentice when Star Jones got so mad she almost popped a staple!”

Then, referring to the preemption of the episode by the news that Osama bin Laden had been killed, Trump bragged, “At the end, we finally killed Osama bin Laden. Osama — boom — you’re fired!”

Seriously, the sketch is stuffed with all-star SNL players doing killer impressions, including Jason Sudeikis as Mitt Romney (“I’ve been smiling for the last four years, but haven’t been happy once!), Tina Fey as Sarah Palin (“I just hope that tonight the lamestream media won’t twist my words by repeating them verbatim”), and Kristen Wiig as Michele Bachmann.

But of course, Trump believes himself to be the winner, whatever happens. “If you criticize me just remember you’re rubber and I’m gold so whatever you say doesn’t matter because I’m gold and you’re losers,” he says.

Never change, Trump, never change.
