Apple TV Can’t Stream CBS’s NFL Live Games

Apple TV set-top customers, starting in the fall of 2015, will be able watch CBS Sports’ coverage of many different sports live — and in full high-definition — under a new agreement with the Eye. But they will not be able to watch National Football League games.

NFL has granted rights to ESPN for “Monday Night Football” games as well as NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” for streaming on Apple TV. But, for the time being, Apple TV will not offer professional football matches from CBS.

Apple TV has an installed base of more than 25 million users worldwide, the company said in March, and makes more than 75 channels available on the box. Those include ESPN, YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, ABC News, HBO Go and more (most of which require an authenticated pay-TV subscription).

Meanwhile, Apple TV is adding a channel for NBCUniversal’s USA Networks, which will provide access to the cabler’s original programming including “Suits,” “Graceland” and “Royal Pains” if they’re pay-TV subs, in the authenticated “TV Everywhere” model. Other series available to registered subs include reality series “Chrisley Knows Best,” comedy “Playing House,” and new dramas “Complications” and “Mr. Robot.”

With the addition of CBS Sports, Apple TV users can now access live sporting events including SEC football games, NCAA basketball and the PGA Tour. In addition, shows such as “Jim Rome,” “Boomer and Carton,” “Fantasy Football Today” and “Fantasy Baseball Today” will be available. But again, on the real football asset via CBS: no dice.
