‘Blindspot’ Creator Teases Hidden Messages; Jane Doe Struggles in NYCC Trailer
“Blindspot” creator-exec producer Martin Gero dropped a big hint for fans during the NBC drama’s panel at New York Comic Con on Sunday: Each of the first 10 episode titles is embedded with a clue.
“The show is about puzzles and games,” Gero said “(Each of the) titles is encoded with a hidden message which allows you to unlock hidden messages. We didn’t tell anyone. No one. Not even the studio.”
Variety’s Laura Prudom moderated the panel with cast members including Sullivan Stapleton, Marianne Jean-Baptiste, Rob Brown, Audrey Esparza, Ashley Johnson and creator- writer Martin Gero, who also serves as executive producer.
“Blindspot” involves the mystery of a beautiful woman, with no memories of her past, who’s found naked in Times Square with her body fully covered in intricate tattoos. Her discovery sets off a vast and complex mystery that grabs the attention of the FBI, which begins to follow the road map on her body to reveal a larger conspiracy of crime while bringing her closer to discovering the truth about her identity.
The series last week was the first of broadcast TV’s fall crop to receive a full-season pickup. It’s performed well for NBC in the Monday 10 p.m. slot behind “The Voice.”
Gero said part of the show’s strength is its gender-balanced appeal.
“I think it’s one of the reason we are doing so well,” Gero said. “When (the studio) tested show, the separated the men and women. Afterwards they asked what the men like and they said, ‘the action.’ Then they asked the women and they said, ‘the action.’ We are just trying to do a great show for men and women.”
It was recently revealed that Jaimie Alexander’s memory-lacking, tattoo-laden Jane Doe may be the grown version of Taylor Shaw, the girl Stapleton’s Kurt Weller has been searching for all these years. But despite the reveal, Gero said that Alexander would continue to be called Jane.
Regarding upcoming episodes, the cast said they don’t know much.
“I don’t want to know,” Stapleton said. “ If I know what is going to happen it could affect my performance.”
“It’s really fun to read the scripts and discover along with the character,” Johnson added.
Gero did tell the cast that the storylines will be traveling beyond New York.
“We will go to Michigan on episode seven and through movie magic we will be international,” Gero teased.
Meanwhile, in a new “Blindspot” trailer released in conjunction with NYCC, things are only seeming to get more complicated for Jane Doe — or, rather, Taylor Shaw.
The trailer shows the blood test confirming Jane Doe as Taylor Shaw, complicating her already confusing life.
