Univision Wins Primetime in Demo for Third Straight Week
Univision has finished on top of the young-adult network rankings for an unprecedented third straight week, as its all-0riginal, novela-driven lineup continues to outperform the listless major networks.
CBS continues to do well with original summer drama “Under the Dome,” but nothing else new is clicking on the Big Four, and veteran reality series are down pretty much across the board.
NBC did OK last week with a trio of new shows — “Camp,” “Get Out Alive With Bear Grylls” and “Hollywood Game Night” — but it’s too early to tell if they’ll stick.
Overall for the week of July 8-14, Univision led in adults 18-49 with a 1.4 rating/5 share, followed by NBC, Fox and CBS (all at 1.2/4), ABC (0.9/3) and top cabler TBS (0.8/2). CBS and NBC were both up slightly from the comparable week of last year.
The Eye edged out the Peacock for the lead in adults 25-54 while also winning in total viewers.
Univision’s novelas “Porque El Amor Manda” (pictured above) and “Amores Verdaderos” won the weeknight 8 and 9 o’clock hours in 18-49, respectively — with both up about 15% from the previous week. The 10 p.m. novela “Que Bonito Amor” also was on the rise, ranking second on average for its hour.
NBC last week produced the summer’s top two unscripted series premieres in “Get Out Alive With Bear Grylls” on Monday (1.5/4 in 18-49, 4.23m) and “Hollywood Game Night” on Thursday (1.4/4, 4.28m).
Another newcomer, Wednesday scripted drama “Camp,” performed similarly (1.5/5, 5.00m), benefiting from a good lead-in from “America’s Got Talent” (2.8/8 in 18-49, 10.71m). The competition series was narrowly the week’s No. 1 program in 18-49 and delivered the Peacock’s top rating in the night’s 9 o’clock hour since November.
Also for the net, “The Winner Is” (1.1/3 in 18-49, 4.03m) didn’t do much in its timeslot debut Thursday (opposite two established reality series), making the premiere numbers for “Hollywood Game Night,” which aired after it, look even better.
Fox was cooking midweek, winning Wednesday in young adults with “MasterChef” (2.3/7 in 18-49, 5.46m average for its two hours) while its “Hell’s Kitchen” (2.1/7 in 18-49, 5.25m) tied as Thursday’s top program. These shows helped make up for its low-rated repeat offerings on Monday and Friday.
CBS notes that last week marked the first time since 2005 that it had finished on top among the Big Four in 18-49 (tying Fox and NBC). “Under the Dome” (2.7/8 in 18-49, 10.71m) finished second for the week in 18-49 and first in both 25-54 (3.5/9) and total viewers (tied with “America’s Got Talent”).
This was the second straight decline following a strong premiere for “Dome,” though it stabilized on Monday of the current week (2.7/8, 11.13m), when it was flat in 18-49 while up 9% in 25-54 and 4% in total viewers.
“Big Brother,” which made headlines recently for the racist, sexist and homophobic comments made by some of the show’s contestants, had its best week of the summer. All three of its editions ranked among the frame’s top 10 programs in 18-49.
ABC had another quiet week for most of its original programs, with Wednesday’s “The Lookout” (0.7/2 in 18-49, 2.85m) and Thursday’s “Motive” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 4.76m) hitting lows. Edging up but remaining lackluster performers are Sunday’s unscripted duo of “Celebrity Wife Swap” (1.2/4 in 18-49, 3.51m) and “Whodunnit?” (1.1/3 in 18-49, 3.12m).
