TVLine Mixtape: Your Favorite Songs from Arrow, Walking Dead, Asylum, New Girl and More

In this week’s Bones, Booth crafted a meaningful playlist as a romantic gesture for Brennan. Shout-out? (Probably not.) Regardless, we’ve pulled together another TVLine Mixtape for you – because we, like Seeley, like you more than a friend.

As always, here are some great songs from recent TV episodes, complete with artist and album information in case you want to add them to your permanent collection. Spoilers abound, and we chose songs we liked – but we always want to hear your thoughts and suggestions.

SERIES AND EPISODE | The Walking Dead, “When the Dead Come Knocking”
TITLE | “Long Ago and Far Away”
ARTIST | Jo Stafford
ALBUM | n/a, but the World War II-era ballad is available on iTunes and Amazon
WHY IT ROCKED | Milton was sure that Stafford’s airy love song, along with some photos and a singing bowl, would bring out Mr. Coleman’s humanity after his zombie transformation. Andrea knew better. In Milt’s defense, the lyrics “Just one look and then I knew, all I longed for long ago was you” certainly seem like they’d be able to soften even the hungriest walker’s heart.

TITLE | “Dead Man’s Party”
ARTIST | Oingo Boingo
ALBUM | Dead Man’s Party (1985)
WHY IT ROCKED | Mr. K may be a bordering-on-creepy nutball, and his end-of-the-world/holiday party may be seriously cracked – “We’ll writhe on the floor!” — but he gets props for the use of the ’80s tune instead of REM’s more obvious “It’s the End of the World as We Know It” (which gets name-checked, as well).

SERIES AND EPISODE |American Horror Story, “The Origins of Monstrosity”
TITLE | “You Don’t Own Me”
ARTIST | Lesley Gore
ALBUM | The single was originally released in 1963; it’s now included on 20th CenturyMasters: The Millennium Collection: Best of Lesley Gore (2000)
WHY IT ROCKED | Sister Mary Eunice – or whatever demon is inside her — rocks Sister Jude’s red slip like she was born to wear it, and she sasses the crucifix as if it were a controlling boyfriend. Fantastic. (And yes, we’re well aware we’re probably going to hell for liking the moment so much.)

SERIES AND EPISODE | The Mindy Project, “Two to One”
TITLE | “Half Awake (Meltdown)”
ARTIST | Samantha Ronson and the Undertakers
ALBUM | Chasing the Reds (2011)
WHY IT ROCKED | Ronson’s boppy number was a fun accompaniment to Mindy taking charge during a c-section… but wouldn’t it have been even better as a victory anthem playing as she owned the midwives in their very own waiting room?

TITLE | “I Love It”
ARTIST | Icona Pop (feat. Charlie XCX)
ALBUM | Iconic (2012)
WHY IT ROCKED | Tommy’s mad at Laurel for trying to get Oliver to offer him a job. We’re mad that Icona Pop’s gleefully screw-you dance cut – which is definitely on the iPods of at least two TVLine editors — wasn’t instead used as background for some of Oliver’s upside-down push-ups… or those rachtet pull-ups… or any scene, really, that finds Stephen Amell sweaty and shirtless.

TITLE | “Strong Enough”
ARTIST | Sheryl Crow
ALBUM | Tuesday Night Music Club (1993)
WHY IT ROCKED | After all of the hype about Nick’s Sexy Mix Playlist, we thought Miller and Amelia were going to it put his song list into seductive action when they slipped into his bed — but the surly bartender called an audible by cueing up Crow’s stripped-down, mid-’90s ballad. Hmm. Saving the good stuff for someone more meaningful and/or adorkable, eh Nick?

TITLE | “Phresh Out the Runway”
ARTIST | Rihanna

WHY IT ROCKED |The real crime in this Victoria’s Secret-tastic episode? That we only got to hear a snippet of Ri-Ri’s jam before the credits rolled. We highly suggest cranking it and turning your living room into your personal runway. Work it, angel!
LINER NOTES | Rihanna also performed this cut at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which aired on CBS the same week as this episode. (What a coincidence!)
