AMC has renewed Hell on Wheels for a third season… again.

Allow us to explain: The Western-set period drama was first given a Season 3 pickup back in October, but shortly thereafter executive producer John Shiban announced he’d be vacating his spot as showrunner. As a result, the renewal was put on hold. (Creators/EPs Joe and Tony Gayton also left the series after Season 2.)

On Wednesday, however, the cabler gave Hell‘s third season a green light, with John Wirth (Falling Skies) at the helm.

The 10-episode season is slated to bow in late 2013.
