Troy Miller Producing NBC Digital’s ‘Hidden America’, Watchup Streaming News Launches Wii U App
Troy Miller (Dakota Pictures) will produce ten episodes of Hidden America, an NBC Digital comedy series starring Jonah Ray. The series will be in essence a comedic version of Anthony Bourdain’s ‘Parts Unknown,’ in which Ray will travel to real settings, but talk to fictional people. “This is a real opportunity for me to really talk to fake people in real cities all over this really great country,” Ray said about the show. Ten half-hour episodes will be produced, including the pilot which was directed by Miller. Jonah Ray, Alex Murray, and Todd Sellers/Brillstein Entertainment Partners will serve as executive producers. Miller is a 2015 Emmy nominee, Outstanding Variety Show for Bill Maher: Live From DC and is currently directing Better Later Than Never for NBC in Asia. He’ll begin filming a comedy special for Brian Regan next month. Previous credits include Arrested Development, Flight Of The Conchords, Deadbeat and The Office.
Streaming news service startup Watchup has expanded to Nintendo’s gaming console Wii U, and is now available in the Nintendo eShop. The service provides customized news tailored to customer interest from an array of partners including Bloomberg News, PBS Newshour, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Fusion, Sky News, Vox, and others. The app makes use of the touchscreen integrated in WiiU controllers, which allows users to navigate Wii U apps on their TV similar to using a tablet, providing the ability to select and read articles or watch video content related to programming they are watching on tv in real time, and customize the experience as they go. The launch of the Wii U follows other announced partnerships between Watchup and broadcasters in more than 70 top markets. Beginning in 2012 at Stanford University’s StartX accelerator, investors in Watchup include Microsoft Ventures, Tribune Media, The McClatchy Company, Knight Foundation, and others.
