‘Tomorrowland’s $74.7M Global Bow; ‘Pitch Perfect 2′ Singing $190.4M Cume; ‘Mad Max’ Smokin’ $227.7M – Wwide B.O. Update

Updated with latest Disney, Warner Bros, Uni and Fox figures, Tuesday 3:51PM: Walt Disney’s sci-fi adventure Tomorrowland came in first among new releases overseas with a $32.1M from 65 territories representing roughly 56% of the international marketplace. Combined with its North American 4-day tally of $42.6M that brings the Brad Bird-directed movie to a global debut total of $74.7M.

Tomorrowland‘s overseas figure couldn’t compete against returning favorite Avengers: Age Of Ultron which outperformed all other films with $46.4M followed by Mad Max: Fury Road with $39M. To be fair, the Disney film is just getting started with some major markets still to come.

Among top markets debuting Tomorrowland, the movie took in $4.3M in Russia, $3.2M in the U.K., $2.8M in Mexico, and $2.5M in France. With more major markets on the way, including China on May 26 and major family territory Brazil on June 4, Tomorrowland is eyeing a future abroad. Significantly, George Clooney was in Shanghai yesterday promoting the pic.

This offshore weekend, says Disney’s Dave Hollis, was “less than what we were hoping for, but it’s too early to tell if it’s really a number that’s going to be disappointing.” Coupled with what Hollis calls a great original story is the favorable competitive landscape ahead for family films. The next major family title to roll out is Disney/Pixar’s own Inside Out which just had a rapturous reception in Cannes. Says Hollis of Tomorrowland, “I think we’ll be in a better spot a week from now and two weeks from now.”
