Tarantino: Batman Is Not Very Interesting

Celebrated director Quentin Tarantino is a fan of a lot of things: grindhouse cinema, blood and guts, Kung Fu movies, just to name a few. But one of the things he apparently has no interest is the classic American superhero Batman.

Recently, the French publication Le Inrockupitibles interviewed the auteur, the translation of which can be found on The Playlist, and asked Tarantino what he thought about Ben Affleck being cast as the iconic caped crusader.

"I have to admit that I don’t really have an opinion… Why? Because Batman is not a very interesting character. For any actor. There is simply not much to play. I think Michael Keaton did it the best, and I wish good luck to Ben Affleck. But, you know who would have made a great Batman? Alec Baldwin in the ’80s."

In a way, the disappointing 1994 film The Shadow was an attempt to make Baldwin into a Batman-like character, but despite the charming star's best efforts the film failed, and Baldwin as Batman would never be.

It is surprising that Tarantino doesn't find Batman interesting though, given his penchant for revenge fantasy, but maybe the Dark Knight just doesn't kill enough people to muster Tarantino's interest.

In the interview, Tarantino also talked about his recent favorite films of 2013 list, and defended his surprise inclusion of the must-maligned The Lone Ranger, saying, “The first forty-five minutes are excellent… the next forty-five minutes are a little soporific. It was a bad idea to split the bad guys in two groups; it takes hours to explain and nobody cares. Then comes the train scene—incredible! When I saw it, I kept thinking, ‘What, that’s the film that everybody says is crap? Seriously?'"

Tarantino also said that The Is The End, the raunchy apocalyptic comedy from Seth Rogen, is "the funniest film of the year, by far."
