'Smash' Renewed For New Season

'Smash' Grabs Sean Hayes

Smash, one of NBC's brightest new standouts, has been renewed for another season.

The critically acclaimed musical drama -- which follows two actresses (Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty) vying for the coveted role of Marilyn Monroe in a Broadway show -- is NBC's No. 1 drama in adults 18-49, with total viewers of 7.7 million, the network said Thursday in a statement.

In addition to McPhee and Hilty, the show also managed to snag other talented cast members including Emmy-winner Debra Messing, whose character writes musical lyrics, and Oscar-winning actress Anjelica Huston, who plays a Broadway producer.

The news about Smash follows the network's recent announcement that it was renewing another scripted series, its unique crime drama Grimm.
