Rob Lowe Comedy Coming to Fox, Along With Miami Medical Drama

Rob Lowe will be back on TV next season with “The Grinder,” a new comedy ordered at Fox, Variety has learned. The network also picked up medical drama “Rosewood,” starring Morris Chestnut.

Both series, the first ordered for the upcoming season at Fox, hail from 20th Century Fox Television.

The Grinder,” from writer-exec producers Jarrad Paul and Andrew Mogel, stars Lowe as Dean Sanderson, a TV lawyer who returns to his small hometown to take over his family’s law firm when his television show wraps. Fred Savage co-stars as his brother, Stewart, and the cast also includes Mary Elizabeth Ellis, William Devane and Hana Hayes. Lowe will also serve as an exec producer, along with Nicholas Stoller and Jake Kasdan, who will direct.

Rosewood” marks the only medical drama at Fox, and further diversifies the net’s programming with the casting of Chestnut, who plays Dr. Beaumont Rosewood Jr., the top private pathologist in Miami who has a knack for finding secrets in bodies that others usually miss. Despite being constantly surrounded by death, he is obsessed with life and savors every moment, but his eternal optimism frustrates the cynical female detective (played by Jaina Lee Ortiz) with whom he works. Gabrielle Dennis, Anna Konkle and Maggie Elizabeth Jones are also series regulars. Todd Harthan serves as writer and exec produces with Temple Hill Entertainment’s Wyck Godfrey and Marty Bowen, plus Richard Shepard.

Previously ordered straight to series at Fox for 2015-16 are Ryan Murphy’s “Scream Queens,” which reunites the creator with “Glee’s” Lea Michele and “American Horror Story’s” Emma Roberts, and the highly anticipated “X-Files” revival, starring David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson.
