Ratings Rat Race: ‘Wipeout’ Down In Return; ‘Take Me Out’, ‘Choice’, ‘Duets’ & ‘Rookie Blue’ Drop; ‘Hope’ Up; Univision Tops Night

It was another mostly down summer night for the English-language broadcast networks, allowing Spanish-language Univision to take charge, edging ABC (1.3/4 in 18-49) and CBS (1.3/4) for the top spot Thursday among adults 18-49 with a 1.4/4. CBS was No. 1 in total viewers (6.5 million) with all repeats.

ABC’s Wipeout (1.9/6) is the latest returning summer series to open lower than last year. The reality series was down 21% from its June 2011 premiere (down 30% from its winter opener). Its lead-in, rookie Duets (1.0/3), continues to falter, down 17% from last week to a series low. At 10 PM, just-renewed Canadian drama Rookie Blue (1.1/3) was down 15% from three weeks ago to a season low. Fox’s new unscripted series Take Me Out (1.0/3) and The Choice (1.2/4) also slid, down 17% and 20%, respectively, from last week. Even the U.S. Olympic Trials on NBC (1.7/6) were down after keeping steady and even slightly growing over the previous nights as Michael Phelps took a break from the pool. Following the trials, a new episode of Canadian import Saving Hope (0.7/2) was the lowest-rated program on the Big 4 networks last night. Still, its rating was up a whopping 40% from last week’s low. Rock Center With Brian Williams (0.8/2) was flat.
