RATINGS RAT RACE: Tuesday Comedy Yo-Yo — Fox Shows Down, ABC’s Up

It feels like the ABC and Fox Tuesday comedy blocks are like the two sides of a U-shaped tube — if the liquid on one side rises, it falls on the other and vice versa. Last week, Fox’s comedies returned from a break flat or up double digits, while ABC’s half-hours were down, posting lows. The roles were reversed last night, with all Fox comedies tying or posting new series lows. Fox’s Dads (1.2) was down 14% from last week, Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.4) was down 14%, New Girl (1.7) was down 15%, and The Mindy Project (1.3) was down 13%. Meanwhile, ABC’s The Goldbergs (1.7) was up 13% and Trophy Wife (1.2) up 9%. And that is with their lead-in, Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. (2.2) still reaching for the bottom, down 12% from last week for a new low.

CBS and NBC‘s lineups were not that volatile. NCIS (2.9) and NCIS: LA (2.4) were even with last week, while Person Of Interest (2.0) was up a tenth. NBC’s The Biggest Loser (1.9) was down 10%, The Voice (3.4) was steady, while Chicago Fire (2.2) returned for hiatus up a tenth.

CW’s The Originals continues to impress. In its first airing following its full-season pickup, the Vampire Diaries spinoff logged a 1.1 in 18-49, up 22% from last week and tying a series best. It also drew its biggest audience ever, 2.38 million. Supernatural (2.35 million, 1.0) was up 11% in the demo, with the two shows delivering the CW’s most watched Tuesday (2.36 million) in more than four years.
