RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘Survivor’, ‘The Middle’, ‘CSI’ & ‘Guys With Kids’ Up, ‘Idol’ Dips

The second week of Survivor‘s 26th season saw fewer people in the competition but more people watching. Wednesday’s one-hour Survivor: Caramoan – Fans vs. Favorites (2.5/7) bopped up 4% from last week’s two-hour premiere. While small, that slight rise is up from the series’ lowest-rated premiere ever February 13. About 9.45 million viewers watched the show last night, up from the 8.96 million who watched last week. American Idol (4.1/11), meanwhile, saw a dip last night: As the show went into sudden-death mode in Las Vegas, it also was down 5% from last week. In the first of a four-show run, 10 songs were belted out in two hours, and half of the female contestants were sent home by the end. Actual viewership was up 6% from February 13 with 14.24 million watching. Idol was easily the most-watched show of the night, ahead of its nearest rival Criminal Minds by almost 3.5 million viewers. Fox topped Wednesday in total viewers and in the adults 18-49 demo.

After running a repeat of The Big Bang Theory last week, CBS had the new Criminal Minds (2.7/8) following Survivor. Pulling in 10.74 million viewers, the procedural slipped 4% from its last original two weeks back. Up from last week’s series low, CSI (2.3/7) surged back with a 21% rise.

On ABC, there were some rises as well Wednesday night. The Middle (2.2/7) was up 16% from last week and The Neighbors (1.9/5) rose 12%. The third most watched show of the night with 10.57 million viewers and the night’s top scripted show across all demos, Modern Family (3.9/10) was up 3% from its February 13 show, while Suburgatory (2.0/5) slipped 5%. ABC ended the night with a Katie Couric-hosted Made About Oscar 20/20 (1.3/4) special in the lead-up to Sunday’s big show on the network.

Whitney (1.1/3) started NBC’s primetime, down 8% from its February 13 show. After last week’s season low, Guys With Kids (1.1/3) took an upward turn, gaining 10% from its February 13 episode. Law & Order: SVU (1.7/4) also rose last night, up 13% from last week, while Chicago Fire (1.9/5) was even with its February 13 airing; the freshman bested its October debut for a seventh week in a row.

The CW’s Arrow (0.9/3) fell 18% from last week and Supernatural (2.0/5) was down 10%.
