RATINGS RAT RACE: ‘Grammy Noms Concert’ Falls, ‘Shark Tank’ Hits Viewership High, ‘Dracula’ & ‘Raising Hope’ Up
It was almost a full press from all the networks on Friday night with only CBS not airing a full original line-up. After some holiday specials with Frosty The Snowman (1.6/5) and Yes Virginia (1.4/4), plus an encore NCIS:LA (0.8/3), the network had its sixth annual Grammys Nomination Concert Live! (1.1/3) with NCIS:LA‘s LL Cool J hosting. Long story short, despite a plethora of performers, including Taylor Swift, and nods for music’s self-described biggest night, the 10 PM Grammy concert was down a hard 27% among Adults 18-49 from the 10 PM December 5 airing of last year. That show, which was on an always more watched Wednesday, had 5.4 million viewers compared to the 5.30 million who tuned in last night. The Grammy show was also no Garth Brooks. The one-hour show was down from what the country superstar pulled in last week for CBS in his Vegas special with a 1.8 rating and 8.8 million viewers.
On the other hand, there were high notes to be hit for ABC on Friday. The top rated show of the night once again, the network’sShark Tank (2.0/6) had its highest fast national result of the season, tied its season high with final numbers. Shark Tank also pulled in its biggest viewership ever over five seasons with 7.5 million watching. With a good chance it might hit a season demo high in the final numbers, the entrepreneurial reality show was up 11% among the 18-49s since its last original two weeks back and bopped up 6% in viewership. Comedies Last Man Standing (1.4/5) and The Neighbors (1.0/3) were up 17% and 11% from their last originals on November 21. A Nelson Mandela focused 20/20 (1.1/3) also saw a boost, rising 22% over last week. With the comedies rises and Shark Tank’s help, ABC and NBC tied for the top spot with a 1.4/4 rating each with the former winning the night in total viewers with 5.950 million watching.
Still, NBC’s night saw all its offerings rising. Dateline (1.4/5) was up 17% from last week to a season high. Grimm (1.6/5) and newbie Dracula (1.1/3) were rose 23% and 22% respectively. Tied with Bones and the Frosty special for the second highest rated show of the night, the former matched the season high of its October 25 premiere and the struggling latter had its best result since its second airing on November 1. Fox’s Bones (1.6/5) had a slight uptick of 7% from its last original of two weeks ago. Lead-out comedy Raising Hope (0.8/2) at 9 PM surged 33% from last week while the show’s 9:30PM airing (0.6/2) was even with its November 29 broadcast. The CW’s The Carrie Diaries (0.4/1) and the soon to be done Nikita (0.3/1) both rose a tenth from their performances last week.
