RATINGS RAT RACE: ABC Tuesday Lineup Tumbles In Week 2, ‘NCIS’ Tops ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’

UPDATE 1:50 PM: Agents Of SHIELD rose .2 in the finals, making the drop from last week’s premiere 28%. But Lucky 7 dropped further to a 0.7, down 46%. Adjusted up by a tenth were NCIS (3.5) and NBC’s The Voice (4.5), while Chicago Fire (2.6) slipped .2, just shy of last week’s series high.

PREVIOUS: NCIS special agent Ziva David trumped the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. last night as the farewell episode of longtime NCIS cast member Cote de Pablo topped the second episode of ABC’s freshman Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. It was a miserable night all around for ABC with big second-week drops. Agents Of SHIELD (3.1/10 in adults 18-49) was down 33% from last week’s big premiere. That still is a pretty potent number, but that can’t be said about the Week 2 ratings for the rest of ABC’s all-new Tuesday lineup. The Goldbergs (2.2/6) was down 29%, Trophy Wife (1.4/4) was down 39%, and Lucky 7 made a serious claim for the first cancellation of the season title with a 0.8/2 — down 38% from last week’s underwhelming premiere and at a level even cheaper summer series can’t survive at.

BROADCAST PREMIERE WEEK: How Did The Networks Do, What Did We Learn?

It was a good night for NBC, which won the night by topping every half-hour in adults 18-49 and was the only network to avoid the second-week blues with no declines. The Voice (4.4/13) was even with its fast national last week and the highest-rated program of the night in 18-49. Chicago Fire (2.8/8) also matched its fast national from last week. There was a minute of Voice overrun, so that could be adjusted down like last week, but the firefighter drama is on track to at least match its premiere week series high of 2.7 if not set a new one.

CBS’ NCIS (3.4/11) too matched the fast national for its season premiere last week with the conclusion of its two-episode arc marking the exit of de Pablo. It was the most watched program of the night with 19.3 million NCIS: LA (2.7/7) was down 10%, while Person Of Interest (2.0/6) was down 13%.

More trouble for Fox’s comedy block, which is crumbling with a second consecutive week of double-digit declines for most series and not a single show cracking the 2 18-49 demo mark: Dads (1.3/4) was down 13%; Brooklyn Nine-Nine (1.4/4) dropped even more, 22%; and New Girl (1.9/5) slipped 10%. The Mindy Project (1.5/4) bucked the trend, holding steady with last week.
