Ratings: ‘The Bachelorette’ Tops Monday; CW’s ‘Penn & Teller’ Solid in Return

Another strong showing by “The Bachelorette” helped ABC top the ratings leaderboard on Monday, a night that also saw CW get back in the game with a good return for “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” and “Whose Line Is It Anyway.”

According to preliminary national estimates from Nielsen, “The Bachelorette” averaged a 2.0 rating/7 share in adults 18-49 and 6.9 million viewers overall from 8 to 10 p.m., on par with last week as the show’s best deliveries since its mid-May season premiere — and up 10% vs. the comparable night a year ago. The dating series again dominated in all female demos and adults 18-34 (2.0/8), beating its combined “American Ninja Warrior”-“So You Think You Can Dance” reality show competition in the latter. Closing out the night for the Alphabet, “The Whispers” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 3.5 million viewers overall) matched its low of the previous week.

NBC was a close second on the night in young adults with “American Ninja Warrior” (1.8/6 in 18-49, 6.2 million viewers overall), which was down a smidge week to week and again dominated Monday in male demos, and the season finale of Bear Grylls reality series “The Island” (1.0/3 in 18-49, 3.4 million viewers overall), which was down a tenth from last week. Another Grylls series, “Running Wild,” takes over for “The Island” in the 10 o’clock hour starting next week.

At CW, “Penn & Teller: Fool Us” (0.5/2 in 18-49, 1.8 million viewers overall) kicked off its season where it premiered at last summer on a Wednesday, matching the rating for the final four episodes of the network’s “The Originals” to air in Monday’s leadoff hour this spring. It was followed by “Whose Line Is It Anyway” (0.5/2 in 18-49, 1.5 million viewers overall), which was at the high end of its spring average when airing on Fridays, and “Cedric’s Barber Battle” (0.3/1 in 18-49, 1.0 million viewers overall), which was up a tick from the previous week’s premiere behind a repeat “Whose Line.”

Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” (1.0/4 in 18-49, 3.4 million viewers overall) inched up from its low of the previous two weeks, but remained a distant third in the battle of two-hour reality competition series.

CBS aired repeats of “2 Broke Girls” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 4.6 million viewers overall), “Mike & Molly” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 4.6 million viewers overall), “Scorpion” (0.7/2 in 18-49, 4.4 million viewers overall) and “NCIS: Los Angeles” (0.8/3 in 18-49, 5.8 million viewers overall).

Preliminary 18-49 averages for the night: ABC, 1.6/5; NBC, 1.5/5; Fox, 1.0/4; Univision, 0.9/3; CBS, 0.8/3; Telemundo, 0.7/2; CW, 0.5/2.

In total viewers: ABC, 5.8 million; NBC, 5.2 million; CBS, 4.9 million; Fox, 3.4 million; Univision, 2.3 million; CW and Telemundo, 1.5 million.
