Marvin Hamlisch, the prolific composer who won Oscars for The Way We Were and The Sting, died in Los Angeles on Monday at the age of 68, The Associated Press reports.

Hamlisch's spokesperson said Hamlisch collapsed and died following a short illness; no further details were released.

Over the course of his career, Hamlisch composed more than 40 film scores including Ordinary People, Sophie's Choice and, most recently, Steven Soderbergh's The Informant! He won three Academy Awards, three Golden Globes, four Emmys, four Grammys and a Tony Award in 1975 for the Broadway musical A Chorus Line, for which he also won the Pulitzer Prize.
