National Magazine Awards: New York Wins Magazine of the Year, Romney '47%' Video Triumphs

The American Society of Magazine Editors named New York the magazine of the year at the annual National Magazine Awards on Thursday night, one of two awards the publication took home.

ASME created the magazine of the year award in 2010 to honor a publication that excels in print and online, something New York has demonstrated with blogs like The Cut and Vulture. The magazine has won 24 trophies since 2006, and its other award Thursday came in the Best Section category, where it won for Strategist.

Three other magazines took home multiple Ellies, as the awards are colloquially known, including National Geographic, which won four, Texas Monthly, which won two, and The Atlantic, which also took home two. National Geographic won in the best news, sports and entertainment magazine category, as well as for its photography, tablet magazine and a specific tablet edition.

Mother Jones, the bimonthly liberal outlet, took home the video award for its politically explosive footage of Mitt Romney talking at a fundraiser about the "47 percent." That video, in which Romney said almost half the population acted like victims, was an inflection point in the 2012 presidential campaign.

Two digital-only publications took home awards, Pitchfork, the popular music website, and Slate, which won for columns and commentary.

Time, GQ, Vogue, Wired and Saveur all received awards while two notable publications, The New Yorker and Esquire, were both shut out.
