‘Martian’ & ‘Hotel Transylvania 2’ Set To Cross $100M This Weekend; ‘Pan’ Soars In Fandango Pre-Sales – Box Office

The autumn season is set to deliver its first two $100M grossing titles with 20th Century Fox’s The Martian and Sony’s Hotel Transylvania 2 poised to cross the century mark this weekend. Ridley Scott’s Martian has zapped up solid weekday figures with Monday hitting $4.4M, Tuesday at $5.5M and Wednesday at an estimated $3.8M bringing its six-day cume to just under $68M. Current weekend projections show Martian posting a second frame in the No. 1 spot of $33M-$34M which would easily shoot the red planet pic past $100M.

Sony Animation’s Hotel Transylvania 2 generated an estimated $1.2M on Wednesday, ranking second behind Martian. The Adam Sandler-produced feature toon stands at $95.2M and it is expected to make between $11M-$16M in its third sesh, putting it well over $100M.

An intriguing piece of data to cross the Deadline news desk this morning is Fandango reporting that pre-sales for Warner Bros.’ pricey $150M Pan are pennies ahead of Martian; that the Joe Wright family epic is outselling Disney’s domestic misfire Tomorrowland at the same point in time (which opened to $33M over FSS during Memorial Day weekend). However, bring up the word Pan with box office analysts and they start seeing red blotches in front of their face. While the hope is that Pan could post a FSS in the low $20Ms, other B.O. beancounters project a high teens weekend. Said one film packager today about Pan, “Everything I am seeing is bad. All 40 major domestic markets are bad, not one is tracking decently. All quadrants are low.” To date, Pan has made $4M overseas from Australia, New Zealand and South Korea. Pan is scheduled to take flight in 60% of all foreign markets this weekend where Warner Bros. hopes to make good on their investment.
