Lester Holt-Anchored ‘NBC Nightly News’ No. 1 In All Key Metrics For Second Week

As NBC News brings back chief Andy Lack to mull the fate of anchor Brian Williams, NBC Nightly News celebrated a second consecutive week in first place among all viewers and in all key demos with Lester Holt in the anchor chair.

World News Tonight with David Muir show the most growth – 12% in total viewers and 4% in the news demo compared to same week last year. Meanwhile, NBC’s newscast was flat in overall audience and up just 1% in the news demo compared to last year. CBS Evening News with Scott Pelley likewise was flat in total viewers, dipping 12% demo-wise.

Something else for Lack to consider: NBC’s broadcast delivered its widest total-viewer margins over both ABC and CBS in four weeks. That makes it Holt’s best advantage over ABC’s World News Tonight With David Muir since Holt began filling in for Williams (Holt did not beat the advantage scored by Williams over ABC’s newscast in his last week on the air before — being suspended as the news division investigates claims he made while covering various news events for the division).

Savannah Guthrie filled in for Holt on Monday last week.

Nightly clocked its eighth week of the past nine at No. 1 in the news demo, and 12th of the past 14 weeks. Nightly averaged 2.391 million news-demo viewers, besting ABC by 90,000 and CBS by 609,000. In the younger, 18-49 demo, the newscast averaged 1.709 million viewers, topping ABC by 174,000 and CBS by 485,000.

In overall audience, Nightly’s first-place status hit 285 consecutive weeks, and 328 of the last 329. Nightly averaged more than 10 million viewers on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday night, marking its ninth consecutive week with at least one night hitting the 10 million threshold.

NBC’s newscast averaged 9.738 million viewers, leading ABC World News Tonight by nearly half a million viewers and CBS Evening News by more than 2 million.
