Kevin and the Christina get 'googan attacked' on 'Wicked Tuna' [Exclusive video]
Move aside, googans! Capt. Kevin Leonowert, owner of the Christina, doesn't have time for your shenanigans. Googans, also called weekend warriors, are part-time fisherman or tourists who don't have a clue about the blue and are wreaking havoc for the pro tuna fishermen of National Geographic's "Wicked Tuna."
In this exclusive sneak peek, the googans are back, and the rivalry for a primo fishing spot is in full swing. When Leonowert spots the tuna coming from the northern waters, he heads that way, and the pressure is on. Unfortunately, others with much less experience have the same thing in mind. "This is the spot right here, and we can't use it. Freaking googan," Leonowert says. "This googan over here is sitting right on my numbers. These are numbers that I've been fishing for 25 years. … I'm not going to take it."
Despite the weekend warriors buzzing around, Leonowert and his crew drop anchor, and they know it's on now. Another boat recklessly speeds right toward their line and blindly runs over their anchor. "I never saw so many f------ idiots in Gloucester [Massachusetts] in my life," says deckhand Greg Gibbs.
Now the Christina's anchor is wrapped around the other boat's propeller, and their buoy is cut clean in half, resulting in necessary repairs during critical fishing hours. When the other boat calls in ("Yeah, I got something here, and I don't know whose it is"), Leonowert is immensely peeved but keeps it classy: "I didn't lay into him like I would've. He was hanging his head. I knew he was truly sorry."
To watch the crew of the Christina wrangle with their tangled lines and overcome the interference of the weekend warriors, watch "Wicked Tuna" on Sunday, 3/3 at 9 PM on the National Geographic channel.
