Jerry 'The King' Lawler 'Responsive' After Heart Attack on 'Monday Night Raw' (Video)
Wrestler Jerry "The King" Lawler suffered a heart attack while delivering commentary for Monday's live "Monday Night Raw," but fellow commentator Michael Cole said he was responsive.
Lawler, 62, fell from his chair mid-match and was given CPR and taken from the arena in Montreal to a hospital.
"I want to preface this by saying this is not part of tonight's entertainment. This is a real-life situation," Cole told viewers. "When he left the building to go a medical center he was breathing on his own, but he was of course receiving oxygen, and we now have an update that we pray to God is a bit more encouraging. But we're being told that Jerry is more responsive as we speak. That he is reacting to lights... in his eyes."
Lawler was awaiting a CAT scan, Cole said.
"We are told that in typical Jerry Lawyer fashion he is fighting hard," Cole added. "Come on, King: Get through this."
Lawler has won 168 championships throughout his career, and is known to non-wrestling fans for his feud with comedian Andy Kaufman in the early 1980s. Kaufman wrestled women at the time as part of his act, and when Lawler said he took exception, the two faced off in Lawyer's hometown of Memphis. Lawler delivered two piledrivers, reportedly sending Kaufman to the hospital. Lawler later slapped Kaufman out of his chair on "Late Night With David Letterman," and Kaufman threw coffee at him.
After Kaufman's death from cancer, Lawler re-enacted the feud for the 1999 film "Man on the Moon," playing himself. He said the feud had been staged all along.
