Those eager to snag the latest model (but who missed the brief, early-hours window) can either order online now (and expect at least a two-week  wait for delivery) or camp outside an Apple retail stores on Sep. 21 where iPhone 5 sales commence at 8 a.m. local times.

The new phones start at $199 with a two-year contract with AT&T, Verizon or Sprint.

This year's buyer momentum has been unprecedented. Pre-orders for iPhone 4S, the most recent predecessor, sold out in about 22 hours, according to All Things D. The iPhone 5 frenzy was mostly smooth sailing (or clicking) but some users reported web glitches that directed them to Apple help hotline.
