‘Hot In Cleveland’ To Kick Off Summer Run With Live Supersized Episode In June

Betty White To Plug Toyota Live On Tonight’s Live ‘Hot In Cleveland’ Season Debut

Hot In Cleveland is going live for its summer premiere next year. The summer portion of the TV Land sitcom’s fourth season will debut on June 19 with a supersized live episode. The episode will air live on the East Coast at 10 PM ET, with the West Coast getting the live-to-tape version at 10 PM PT. “This is going to be big,” said TV Land president Larry W. Jones. “We’ve got true sitcom veterans with the cast of Hot In Cleveland and I can’t wait to see what unfolds.” Hot In Cleveland, which is filmed in front of a live audience, stars Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick and Betty White. The sitcom is currently shooting its fourth season and returns with new episodes on Nov. 28.

Once a staple, live comedy is extremely rare on TV these days, with NBC’s late-night sketch show Saturday Night Live left pretty much alone to carry the tradition. A handful of comedy series have tried going live for stunt episodes, most notably ABC’s The Drew Carey Show, which like Hot In Cleveland was multi-camera, and NBC’s single-camera 30 Rock, which switched to a multi-cam format for the live stints. This development season, Fox has in the works Live From Our Living Room, a re-imagining of the domestic family multi-cam sitcom from writers Cathy Yuspa and Josh Goldsmith, which would be shot and aired live every week.
