HBO Comedy Pilot ‘Insecure’ Taps Prentice Penny As Showrunner

Prentice Penny (Brooklyn Nine-Nine) has been tapped as executive producer and showrunner of HBO’s comedy pilot Insecure starring Issa Rae. Co-written by Rae and Larry Wilmore and directed by top music video director Melina Matsoukas, Insecure focuses on

the awkward experiences and racy tribulations of a modern day African-American woman, themes Rae has tackled in her webseries, The Misadventures Of Awkward Black Girl. Penny will executive produce the pilot, expected to film in the fall, along with 3 Arts’ Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky and Jonathan Berry. Rae is a co-executive producer. Wilmore, who worked on the project before landing his Comedy Central late-night show, will serve as consultant.

Penny was a co-executive producer on the Golden Globe-winning freshman season of Fox’s Brooklyn Nine-Nine and was a consulting producer in Season 2. He also served as supervising producer on ABC’s Happy Endings and created and executive produced the NAACP Award-winning Fuse Network series The Hustle.

Penny is repped by CAA, Generate and attorneys John Meigs and Adam Kaller.
