A storm is coming on Grey's Anatomy and sending the doctors of the Grey Sloan Memorial scrambling to deal with difficulties that comes with torrential downpour and power outages in the final two episodes of Season 9.
"The hospital is going to find itself dealing with some technical difficulties," executive producer Shonda Rhimes tells TVGuide.com. "The general outcropping of what happens when patient care is affected by the need to move patients and the need to deal with all the things that happen when a storm happens. They're going to be facing a lot of challenges."
To give you an idea of what the doctors will face, Rhimes recalls the episode in which the attendings banded together to teach the visiting Syrian doctors how to do procedures in different ways by using the limited supplies they have on hand. "Now they're facing that themselves, which is going to be great," Rhimes says.
Naturally, the repercussions of the storm won't be good for Meredith (Ellen Pompeo), who was seen in the penultimate episode's promo slipping and then falling down the stairs during the storm. "She has that fall, and that starts a string of events that is cause for concern," Rhimes says. "Then, in the finale, we have the storm hit and the conditions under which Meredith Grey has to go into labor are the exact opposite of any conditions under which anybody ever in the world would want to have to give birth. Ellen joked, 'That's, of course, how it would be for Meredith Grey.' It's also a really beautiful story, and I think Ellen did amazing work on it and I'm really excited about it."
For fans fearing that Meredith may be the doctor whose life is in danger in the finale, as written in the episode's description, Rhimes would only tease, "We will see a doctor fighting for their life. We will leave the season with someone fighting for their life. There's plenty of jeopardy in the finale, there's a lot of pain, but there's also some joy. Unlike some seasons when there was no joy and only pain, there is some joy."
Be sure to check back for more scoop from Rhimes, including the fate of Callie (Sara Ramirez) and Arizona's (Jessica Capshaw) relationship, what's in store for Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Owen (Kevin McKidd) and how Alex (Justin Chambers) will handle Jo's (Camilla Luddington) incident.
Grey's Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC.
