The space thriller Gravity drew the masses out to theaters this weekend, setting a record in the process with its celestial opening.

The film, starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, pulled a cosmic estimated $55.6 million domestic, recording the largest October opening in box-office history. The previous record holder was Paranormal Activity 3, which conjured $52.6 million in 2011.

Gravity's galactic release weighed heavily on the rest of the box office, including fellow opening film Runner Runner, starring Ben Affleck and Justin Timberlake, which experienced less than 15 percent of Gravity's debut, with a $7.9-million domestic opening (3rd).

Topping Runner Runner was last weekend's box-office ruler Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, which bumped its gross domestic total up to $60.5 million with a $21.5-million second weekend in release.

Third-week films Prisoners (4th: $5.7 million, $47.8 million) and Rush (5th: $4.5 million, $18.2 million) finished with mild totals despite housing A-list actors Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal in the former and Olivia Wilde and Chris Hemsworth along with director Ron Howard in the latter.

The low-budget ($6 million) directorial debut of Joseph Gordon-Levitt's Don Jon, in which he stars alongside Scarlett Johansson, wasn't far behind with a $4.2-million in its second weekend (7th), which boosted its gross domestic total to $16.1 million.

Capping off the Top 10 was James Gandolfini's posthumous release Enough Said, also starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, which attracted $2.1 million over the weekend despite its limited release.

The romantic comedy, which is currently running in 437 theaters (12% of Gravity's run), has reaped $5.4 million domestic after three weeks.
