Golden Globes: Boost for ‘Brooklyn,’ Pat on Back for ‘Parks’
The spotlight of a Golden Globe comedy series nom is sure to add to the momentum of Fox’s “Brooklyn Nine Nine,” which has the distinction of being the only new Big 4 network show to land a series nom.
Thursday morning was doubly sweet for “Brooklyn” co-creator/exec producer Michael Schur as his other sitcom baby, NBC’s “Parks and Recreation,” scored its first Globe comedy series nom, in its sixth season. “Brooklyn” star Andy Samberg and “Parks” chief Amy Poehler also nabbed lead acting bids.
As he worked away in the editing room on “Brooklyn,” Schur assured that he and co-creator/exec producer Daniel Goor didn’t see either nomination coming, by a mile.
Golden Globes: Stars React to the Nominations
“The truth is there are so many good TV shows on the air that to assume you’re going to get nominated for anything is crazy,” he said. “And when you’re in season six of a show, it’s nice to be recognized for the first time.’
“Brooklyn” has been a slow build ratings-wise for Fox in its Tuesday 8:30 p.m. slot. But the show has undeniable heat with critics (and in Live-plus-7 ratings), thanks to a strong ensemble. Samberg and Andre Braugher are the anchors, but the wealth is spread among lesser-known thesps including Joe Lo Truglio, Stephanie Beatriz, Chelsea Peretti and Melissa Fumero.
“A lot of people were familiar with Andy and Andre going in but we’ve also got people like Joe Lo Truglio, who is a hilarious comic actor. Every comedy writer knows about him but he hasn’t been on a network TV show yet,” Schur says. “It looks like we did this amazing magic trick of creating all these funny people out of thin air. But Joe’s been funny for a long time, we were just able to grab him for our show.”

Samberg’s recognition for comedy actor was made all the sweeter because he sets such a good tone for the working environment of the show. Samberg was more excited about the show’s nom than his own, Schur said.
“Andy has what Amy Poehler and Steve Carell have — he’s happiest when everybody is happy and that’s the nicest possible quality you can have in a TV star,” he said.
As for Poehler, who landed her third consecutive nom for “Parks,” Schur has a message for Globe voters:
“I hope that this is the year for Amy. Somebody needs to give her a trophy.”
