Exclusive: Outlander Adds Borgias Actress

Outlander Season 1 Cast Lotte Verbeek
Outlander Season 1 Cast Lotte Verbeek

It’s official: The latest Outlander role to be cast is a real witch.

Lotte Verbeek, best known as Italian temptress Giulia Farnese on Showtime’s The Borgias, has joined Starz’s upcoming series adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s popular novels, sources confirm to TVLine exclusively.

As has been rumored online for some time, Verbeek will portray Geillis Duncan.

In the books, Geillis is a sly, 18th-century Scottish woman who dabbles in the black arts and befriends accidental time-traveler Claire (played by Catriona Balfe in the TV series). It soon becomes clear that she has an ulterior motive for all of her seemingly supportive gestures.

Also confirmed: British actor James Fleet (Four Weddings and a Funeral, The Vicar of Dibley) will take on the role of Rev. Wakefield, a Scottish historian of sorts who — in the books — interacts with Claire and husband Frank in the 1940s.

Battlestar Galactica‘s Ronald D. Moore is overseeing the historical drama, which follows British combat nurse Clare as she stumbles upon a Stonehenge-like group of standing stones and is unwillingly tossed back to 1743.
