Emmy Awards Transitioning to Online Voting System
Emmy voting just got a digital upgrade.
Academy of Television Arts and Sciences chairman-CEO Bruce Rosenblum has unveiled plans to transition to an online voting system. The two-year, two-step switchover will first cover the initial round of Emmy voting that determines the nominees across all categories. But in 2015, online voting will be extended to all rounds of Television Academy’s Emmy voting process, determining nominees and winners in all categories. A paper ballot will also be distributed to ATAS’ 16,300 voting members during the two-year transition phase.
“This is the first in a series of new initiatives for the Academy that will be rolling out over the coming months,” Rosenblum said in a statement. “We refine the Emmy Awards process every year, and this migration to an all-digital, online voting procedure will ensure that voting is easy, private and secure. This is all part of our ongoing mission to activate greater member engagement, to inspire and help our members develop their professional potential, and to bring new and long-established voices within the television community together to continue to chart a bold path for our industry.”
The TV Acad’s implementation of online voting follows the same move made by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences last year. AMPAS’ rollout was not without its hiccups among members, which undoubtedly ATAS will examine in its efforts to introduce the system to its members.
